Chapter 8

The next morning, Rebecca called Katie and told her she went through her closet, and had some bags of clothing for her. She had them with her in her car. Katie was excited to see them, and told her she could stop by the school in the afternoon. She was going to take her up on her offer to meet the children.

Brett’s car was ready to be picked up at Henry’s so he called Katie to see if she wanted to grab some lunch after he got it. She told him she was visiting the school later, and about the clothes Rebecca was giving her.

“Now I’m going to have to find some clothes to keep up with my stylish girlfriend,” he teased. There was a popular men’s clothing store in town, Brom’s, that he wanted to check out.

“I can drop you off at school, and do some shopping if you’d like.”

“Sounds like a plan. Just don’t go too extravagant. My clothes are hand-me-downs.”

Lunch at the diner was always an adventure. Lori kept the place lively, and the customers loved to hear her stories. Today’s special was ham pot pie, which was another one of their favorites. After lunch, Brett dropped Katie off. He wasn’t really in the mood to shop; his parents gave him money, and he always carried a credit card his father gave him when he was in high school. His parents trusted him, and he never wanted to let them down.

Brom’s wasn’t busy, and the salesperson was more than helpful. After hearing that he was a student at Rocky Ridge, the manager approved a significant discount on whatever items he purchased. Brett took advantage of his offer, and was able to find some dress and casual clothes. He didn’t have to look too far for a job. His father offered him a position in his accounting firm, and Brett was hoping to find out soon about his online and virtual class schedule.

When Katie arrived at the school, Rebecca introduced her to the class. The children were anxious to show her the artwork they were working on. The bell rang, and it was time for recess. The children put on their light jackets, and lined up to go outside. Katie looked forward to going out to the playground again. She was curious to see which games or equipment the children would use. A few boys grabbed a basketball, and some of the girls were getting ready to play hopscotch. A group of boys and girls were selecting teams for dodgeball. On top of the hill, a number of students were headed for the swings, monkey bars and seesaws.

One little girl was standing by the chain link fence looking over at the house and workshop that they saw the other day. She told her friend that a scary man lived there. Katie overheard her remark, and took her over to the swings. The little girl’s name was Elizabeth, and even though Katie moved her away, she kept looking back.
